A CMA CGM vessel sailing from Le Havre has lost 14 containers overboard in strong winds and large swells.
The 5,700 TEU CMA CGM Rossini lost the containers near the island of Ushant, off northeast France, on Saturday.
A report from the area suggests that at the time there were winds of 27 knots and swells of 6-7m.
The French carrier immediately informed the French maritime authorities and a crisis response team was formed.
A seaplane flew over the area where the incident occurred to identify whether any containers were still floating.
CMA CGM stated that the containers did not contain any dangerous goods, and no injuries or pollution occurred.
Officials inspected the remaining cargo and rescued other containers. Authorities are continuing to assess the situation to determine whether additional safety measures are needed to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Shipping experts stress the importance of stringent cargo-securing procedures, particularly in rough weather conditions. CMA CGM is working closely with port authorities to monitor the situation and provide updates to customers with affected shipments.
