A CMA CGM vessel sailing from Le Havre has lost 14 containers overboard in strong winds and large swells.
The 5,700 teu CMA CGM Rossini lost the containers near the island of Ushant, off northeast France, on Saturday.
A report from the area suggests that at the time there were winds of 27 knots and swells of 6-7m.
The French carrier said it immediately informed the French maritime authorities and a crisis response team was formed.
A seaplane flew over the area where the incident occurred to identify whether any containers were still floating.
CMA CGM said there were no dangerous goods in the containers and no injuries or pollution have been reported.
Inspections were carried out on the remaining cargo and other containers were rescued.
